AAST Announces Raul Coimbra, MD, PhD, FACS as President
CHICAGO, Illinois — October 1, 2016 —The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma announced on September 16th that Dr. Raul Coimbra has been named the next president of the association, effective September 16, 2016. In line with the esteemed association’s policies, he will hold the presidency for one year.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Coimbra, an international leader in the field, as President of the AAST,” said AAST’s immediate past president Dr. Grace S. Rozycki. “His leadership and vision will enhance the position of our organization as a global presence in the Trauma community.”
Dr. Coimbra is the Surgeon-in-Chief in the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center Hillcrest Campus, is Chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center; and is the Director of the Level-1 Trauma Center at the UC San Diego Health. He is also the Monroe E. Trout Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma at UC San Diego. In addition to his work as a surgeon, teacher, and advocate for patient care and improvement of trauma systems in the United States, he has helped develop hospital and emergency trauma care centers and systems, and related services, in Suwon, South Korea; Yokohama, Japan; and Cape Coast, Ghana.
Dr. Coimbra actively holds both membership and leadership positions in many professional associations and societies including the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Panamerican Trauma Society, the Western Trauma Association, the World Health Organization, and the World Society of Emergency Surgery. Dr. Coimbra is the President of the Board of Directors for the World Coalition for Trauma Care.
In addition to being a member of over ten scientific editorial boards, a scientific ad hoc reviewer for over fifteen journals, and the recipient of numerous contracts, grants, and awards; Dr. Coimbra, in collaboration with colleagues, has authored over 500 research articles, abstracts, and book chapters.
Dr. Coimbra was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and he received his MD and PhD from Santa Casa School of Medicine in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
